You Can Do It, Too!

COIN THROUGH HANDKERCHIEF
Here is a clever effect using a pocket handkerchief and a coin (a half-dollar is a good size to use).

EFFECT: The magician displays a coin at the tips of his right thumb and fingers. He then drapes the handkerchief over the coin so that the coin seems to penetrate the fabric of the handkerchief, without leaving a trace of a tear or a hole. The magician can then hand both the coin and the handkerchief for examination.

METHOD:
1. For this effect you may use your own handkerchief, but the trick is stronger if you utilize a borrowed one. In either case, first display the coin by holding it at the tips of your thumb and first two fingers. Your fingers and thumb are pointing up with one side of the coin facing the audience.

2
. With your left hand, drape the handkerchief over the coin and over your right hand. The coin should be under the center of the handkerchief.

3
. With your left hand adjust the handkerchief around the coin. At the same time, underneath the handkerchief, secretly lift a small bit of cloth behind the coin with your right thumb and fold it around your left thumb as shown.

4
. Remove your left hand, leaving the small bit of handkerchief "nipped" between your right thumb and the back of the coin. This places two layers of fabric between the right thumb and the coin.

5
. Now, grasp the front edge of the handkerchief with your left hand, lifting it up, back and completely over the coin. This action will expose the coin to the spectators, supposedly to assure them that the coin is still in its original position.

6
. THE FOLLOWING MOVE IS THE REAL SECRET OF THE TRICK: With your left hand, grasp BOTH EDGES of the handkerchief and lift them both up and over the coin as shown.

7
. The effect on the spectators will be that you simply exposed the coin for them to show that it was still there and then re-covered it with the handkerchief as before.

8
. In actuality you are now holding the coin OUTSIDE the back of the handkerchief.

9
. With the left hand, grasp the coin through the now doubled over fabric and remove your right hand as shown. It will appear to the audience as if the handkerchief is draped completely around the coin.

10
. With your now free right hand twist the lower part of the handkerchief around the coin.

11
. As you twist the handkerchief, the shape of the coin will become visible under the fabric.

12
. You may also adjust the cloth over the exposed "Back" of the coin and show the handkerchief on all sides, if you wish.

13
. Now, slowly push the coin upwards in the handkerchief as your left hand comes over to take the edge of the coin as it "penetrates" the handkerchief.

14
. You may now hand both the handkerchief and the coin for examination.
